Most travel content answers the wrong question. It tells you where to go, when the harder problem is choosing between the train and the car, working out whether a rental is worth it once fees land, or deciding if a paid trail app earns its subscription.
The Modern Rutter exists to answer those questions. We read published fares, policies, coverage maps, and feature lists, then translate them into a recommendation tied to a specific kind of trip: a solo weekend, a family drive, a gear-heavy outdoor trip, a business run between two downtowns.
We are an independent publication. We do not accept payment for a placement or a rating, and we say plainly when an option is the wrong fit, including for brands we may earn commission from.

How we research travel
Our research draws on published pricing structures, official policies and terms, route and coverage information, station and location networks, product documentation, and feature comparisons. Where first-hand experience of a service exists, we say so explicitly and describe what we did.
We do not publish invented fares, invented travel times, or fabricated availability. Pricing and schedules change constantly, so we describe them as variable and point readers to the operator for current figures. See the review frameworks.
