Standards

Editorial Policy

The rules The Modern Rutter applies to every published page: how we choose what to cover, how we reach a verdict, and how commercial relationships are kept out of it.

Editorial independence

The Modern Rutter decides what to cover and what to recommend independently of any commercial relationship. No brand pays for a ranking, a rating, a comparison-table position, or inclusion in a guide.

Brands do not preview drafts, approve verdicts, or influence the criteria we score against. Affiliate compensation does not determine editorial recommendations, and the presence or absence of an affiliate relationship is never a factor in a verdict.

How destinations are selected

We prioritise destinations where the travel decision is genuinely open: cities reachable by more than one practical mode, with real trade-offs between rail, driving, and flying.

We publish a destination guide only when we can cover getting there, getting around, what to do, and nearby outdoor options with useful specificity. We do not publish stub city pages to inflate the size of the site.

How travel services are evaluated

Each category has a published framework of criteria, weighted for the kind of trip the service serves. Those frameworks are documented on our how we review page.

Evidence comes from published pricing structures, official policies and terms, coverage and route information, location networks, product documentation, and feature comparisons. Where we have genuine first-hand experience, we describe what we did rather than implying it.

How comparisons work

Comparisons score the same criteria for both options and state which one has the edge on each, including ties. We do not construct a comparison to steer readers toward a commercial link.

Where the right answer depends on the trip, the page says so and gives the conditions that decide it: distance, party size, luggage, parking, schedule flexibility, and whether a vehicle is needed on arrival.

Affiliate relationships

The Modern Rutter may earn a commission from qualifying bookings, subscriptions, or purchases made through some links. Commission-bearing links are marked as sponsored in the page markup; ordinary editorial links to brand sites are not.

Until a program is approved we link to standard brand URLs. We do not describe any brand as an official partner unless an approved relationship exists.

Sponsored content

The Modern Rutter does not publish sponsored articles, paid reviews, paid guest posts, or link insertions. If that ever changes, such content would be labelled unmistakably at the top of the page and excluded from rankings and comparisons.

Corrections

We correct factual errors as soon as they are confirmed. Substantive corrections are noted on the page. To report an error, use the editorial corrections option on our contact page and include the page and the specific claim.

Updates

Every article carries a last updated date. Recommendation pages are reviewed when a brand changes a policy, a fee structure, a coverage area, or a product tier, and on a routine cycle otherwise. When a verdict changes, the page is rewritten rather than quietly re-dated.

Pricing and availability

Fares, daily rates, subscription prices, schedules, and availability change constantly and vary by route, date, and location. The Modern Rutter does not publish invented figures to fill a table.

Where we have not verified a current price, we describe it as variable and point to the operator for live figures. Any illustrative figure is labelled as a hypothetical example, not a quote.
