Hike early or not at all

From October through April, trailhead lots fill by 7am. From May through September, hike at sunrise and carry more water than feels reasonable.

The three preserves

Camelback for the summit push, South Mountain for long ridge miles and a scenic drive, and the McDowell Sonoran Preserve for smoother, longer loops.

Day trips

Sedona is two hours north and worth an overnight. Cathedral Rock at sunset is the postcard, so start early to park.
